Administrator-In-Training Program

The Board has established the Administrator-In-Training Program as the way a person seeking initial licensure as a nursing home administrator may obtain practical training and experience in nursing home administration.

In brief, the requirements are:

1. The applicant must hold at least a baccalaureate degree from an educational institution which must be accredited by one of the regional accrediting associations as listed in Rule 4751-1-02(A).
2. The applicant must complete the Core of Knowledge course.
3. The applicant must complete a registered, approved internship which is nine (9) months with a bachelor's degree and six (6) months with a master's degree. This must be served on a full-time basis.
4. All training must be done under the direct supervision of a licensed nursing home administrator/preceptor who is in full-time practice in the nursing home approved by the Board as the applicant's internship training site.
5. The applicant must take and pass the national examination and the state examination.

The Core of Knowledge requirement may be met before, during, or after the internship. It may be met by completing the Core of Knowledge course at the Ohio State University. For further information, please contact:

Please Note:

The Core of Knowledge at Ohio State University is not a preparatory course for the National or State exams. The information obtained at the Core of Knowledge is vital information, which will help you become a successful Nursing Home Administrator. The Core of Knowledge also provides networking opportunities, which will have a positive impact on your career as a Nursing Home Administrator.

Registration deadlines for the internship and meeting dates are as follows:

For example, if you want to start your internship on April 1, your application/training plan must be submitted by January 21st. It will first be reviewed by the Board's Education Committee in February. Then you will have the opportunity to make changes, if necessary, before the complete application is forwarded to the Board in March for official action. If it is approved, your internship will begin on April 1.

If you wish to apply for the Administrator-In-Training internship to prepare for licensure as a nursing home administrator, return the "Preliminary Data for AIT Program" form to the Board office and an application packet will be mailed to you.
